Starting in September, in the historic setting of the historic Green-Wood Cemetery’s Catacombs, Janine Antoni will present her newest installation, I am fertile ground. For nearly three decades, Antoni has used the body, most often her own, as a tool to produce her sculptural, photographic, and performative work. I am fertile ground continues and expands this theme in her practice, connecting her study of emotionally resonate gestures with objects inspired by religious icons. Made specifically for the Catacombs, each object renders the body as both exalted and fragile.
Green-Wood has commissioned the installation, which has been generously supported by a grant from National Endowment for the Arts. One will also have the opportunity to join Janine Antoni herself for one of the accompanying events and workshops in the coming months.
